Can Cannabidiol CBD protect us from the COVID virus?

There is a lot of buzz around the research world of a breakthrough of CBD being a covid protector. And the race is on to claim bragging rights of this breakthrough. Although I personally have not seen the statistics of those diagnosed with COVID if they were CBD users or any studies, I have read mentioning if the patients were CBD users before contacting COVID. At this moment, there is no specific treatment or cure for COVID 19. Nor is there a successful vaccination for humans to date. Scientists are in the race to get a vaccine out but will need more time to test and develop the right vaccine. Now it would be hard for me to explain how CBD could be a COVID protector without using a little virology (the study of viruses) to explain the correlation of COVID, the body and CBD. I promise to make this explanation quite simple to understand. So, with this let us see what the buzz is all about and if CBD can be a COVID protector.

CAN CBD PROTECT US FROM COVID: WHAT EXACTLY IS COVID?

SARS-COV2 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus 2 otherwise known as COVID is a mild to severe respiratory illness contracted through droplets or touching infected humans or objects. This virus has caused many deaths across the country. With most of those deaths being of elderly or those with underlying medical conditions. The virus originated in Wuhan, China and the origin is still questionable how this highly contagious virus started or its source or even how it got to the US. This virus enters the body’s ACE 2 receptor via the virus glycoprotein spikes. Killing the body’s healthy cells for the virus to grow and spread. So, what is an ACE 2 and a glycoprotein? Now here is where that virology language comes in.

GLYCOPROTEIN THE SWEET PROTEIN

Glycoprotein (glycol meaning sugar) are molecules present in many viruses. These molecules are made up of proteins and carbohydrates and are involved in the functions of the body including immunity. Glycoproteins help viruses enter the body but also serves as a therapeutic preventive target to fight off infections as well. Nearly every cell process contains sugar proteins. Glycoproteins have diverse functions in our immune system to protect our bodies communication between cells.

It also assists with coagulation of the blood along with helping organs secrete mucus to retain water for lubricant to function properly, such as the stomach, small intestines and the lungs airways to help bacteria to keep lungs clean and healthy.

ACE 2 THE CARD THAT KEEPS THE BODY IN CHECK

No, our body does not consist of playing cards, but if so that one card would be an ACE. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2 or you can call it ACE 2 is a protein enzyme that generates small proteins that are on the surface of many cells. This protein is found in cells in certain organs of the body such as the heart, arteries, kidneys, intestines and

lungs. Abundance of ACE 2 can be found in the alveolar epithelial cells in the lungs making this the molecular target for COVID. Alveolar cells are the lungs’ air sacs that exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. These cells cover 95 % of the surface of the lungs and is the antimicrobial defense immunity of the lungs. ACE 2 also has more roles than that in our bodies. It also serves as a hemostatic regulator of vascular functions of the body such as blood pressure, blood volume and regulating regional blood flow. It has been discovered that patients diagnosed with COVID have elevated ACE 2 levels in their bodies.

SO, WHAT WOULD BE THE CORRELATION OF CANNABIDIOL (CBD) AND THE BODY?

Although the study of our endocannabinoid system, the molecular system responsible for regulating and balancing the homeostasis of the body to allow communication between cells, also the role of cannabinoids in our body, is yet to be studied more closely. CBD could possibly control the ACE 2 protein molecule assembly, by controlling the ACE 2 receptors therefore reducing the virus (COVID) susceptibility. Since cannabinoids are mainly controlled by two members of the glycoprotein coupled receptor family Cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R) and Cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2R) cannabinoid receptor CB2R is found in a number of immune cells in the body.

FINAL THOUGHTS: SO HOW WOULD CANNABINOID (CBD) BE CONSIDERED A COVID PROTECTOR?

Using a high cannabinoid CBD may help the body’s immune system to efficiently function properly, and could possibly protect the ACE 2 receptors from allowing the glycoprotein spikes associated with COVID from entering healthy cells, by protecting the most vital organs that have the most abundance of ACE 2 receptors by way of the cannabinoid receptors in the body. Making our bodies more resistant and protected from the COVID virus, thus helping to preventing more cases, deaths from this virus.
